Abstract

Forest management plans, working plans, and files starting from 1938 were surveyed. An extensive increase of the MU "Kupinski Kut" area was the result of the establishment of fast growing poplar plantations. In the first rotation, the prevailing cultivars were Euramerican Populus x euroamericana (Dode) Guinier, e.g.: cv. serotina, cv. marilandica and cv. robusta. The second cycle was mostly Populus x euroamericana (Dode) Guinier cl. I-214. Thanks to the high productivity of this clone and the above representation, in spite of the foresters' expectation of the lower timber production in the second rotation, the results were quite opposite. This paper points to the potential increase of wood volume increment and production by the good clone selection, knowledge of site conditions, application of the adequate technology of establishment and timely tending and protection measures in poplar plantations.
