Study of Preference Degree of Poplar Clearwing Moth and Willow Weevil Versus Black Poplar Clones

Abstract
There are frequent, and sometimes numerous dameges made by poplar clearwing moth (Paranthrene tabaniformis Rott.) and willow weevil (Cryptorrhynchus lapathi L.) in poplar nurseries and young plantations. It has been noted that the poplar clones were attacked by different intensity – some clones are less, and some more attacked, i.e. insects prefere some clones more. Results of preference degree versus six clones of eastern cottonwood (Populus deltiodes Bartr.), three of euramerican poplar (Populus x euramericana Dode), and one of european black poplar (Populus nigra L.) are presented in this work. The preference degree was evaluated according to number of galls and larvae in plants at the beggining of spring in the period from 2004 till 2008. Results showed that there were statisticaly significant differences among exmined clones in the intenzity of the attack i.e. preferention of poplar clearwing moth and willow weevil. That suggests the possibility of selection of clones of minor or insignificant atraction for these insects, as well as the possibility of considerable reduction of the damage in nurseries and young plantations by utilization of such clones.
