Soil Characteristics in Novi Sad Parks and the Levels of Lead Concentration
Corresponding author:
Abstract
Heavy metals are considered as one of the main sources of the soil and environmental pollution. A great portion of heavy metal pollution is of anthropogenic character. At the global level, the greatest problem is lead accumulation in the soil. The sources of emission of other heavy metals are practically of local significance. The soils of Novi Sad parks are in the protected part of the river Danube alluvial plain. They are distinguished by high variation of physical, water, air and chemical characteristics at a small distance. As it is an urban environment, the soils in Novi Sad are mainly of anthropogenic character. The characteristics of the soils of such origin have been insufficiently studied, especially from the aspect of bioecological demands of ornamental trees and shrubs. The insufficient study of individual heavy metal loads in the soil results in a higher likelihood of inadequate ambiance for the growth of woody species, as allochthonous plants are the prevalent species in the parks. This paper presents the basic characteristics of the soils of four parks in Novi Sad, with special reference to lead contents.
